Fort Nongqayi, located in Eshowe in northern KwaZulu-Natal, is a historically significant military and administrative site originally established in the late nineteenth century during the Anglo-Zulu War period. Built in 1883, it served as a British colonial fortification and later became a key administrative centre in Zululand. The fort’s name, “Nongqayi,” refers to the Zulu term for “police” or “guard,” reflecting its original role as a base for the Zululand Native Police.
Today, Fort Nongqayi has been repurposed as a major heritage complex housing museums and cultural institutions, including displays on Zulu history, missionary encounters, and colonial conflict. As a heritage site, it plays an important role in preserving and interpreting the layered history of the region, offering visitors insight into both indigenous and colonial narratives that shaped northern KwaZulu-Natal.
